| OUR FIRST 8X8 TOURNAMENT
WAS A RESOUNDING SUCCESS! |
| Congratulations to Phillip Meyer on his victory at the first Holdem Northwest Invitational Tournament, held on August 16th at the Dublin Pub. Phil, playing for the Altern 8s team, outlasted Jason Krahn of the the Dirty Half Dozen Plus Two who placed second, and Sara Lange of Team Woodstock, who took third. Eighty players took part.
The tournament was designed as an 8 x 8 shootout, with one player from each of eight teams at each table. But throwing a party for exactly 64 players is tricky. Expecting that some would be unable to attend (or to remember to come after a Saturday night) some extra players were invited, to ensure a full tournament. But then the unexpected happened—virtually everybody showed up—and some brought friends! Ten tables of eight started the tournament instead of eight tables. Each table played until only one was left, and those 10 played at the Final Table. (Click on team name for photograph.) The teams: Team Pyzanos, led by Biker Bob, whose last name is unpronounceable and unspellable; Team Famous, led by “Famous Juan” Magana; Reba’s Divas, headed by Reba Crocker; The Elite 8, from another league and led by Sam Berman; The Dirty Half Dozen Plus Two, led by Tony Chamberlain and Gale Templin; The Team With No Name, led by Brian “Anonymous” Hass; Team Woodstock, led by Bob “Boomer” Blackey who was wearing a Woodstock T-shirt and can’t remember if he was there; The Altern-8's, led by David Kjos; The Dark Queen and her Flying Monkeys, co-captained by Erin “The Queen of Darkness” Jurovich and Derek “Erin’s Husband” Jurovich; and the statistically insignificant Nathan’s Outlier Nation, led by Nate Lambert. The final results: First: Phillip Meyer, Altern 8s Second: Jason Krahn, Dirty Half Dozen Plus Two Third: Sara Lange, Team Woodstock Fourth: Bob Tofte, Reba’s Divas Fifth: Erick Chamberlain, Dirty Half Dozen Plus Two Sixth: Lisa DeBorde, Reba’s Divas Seventh: Robin Corrigan, Team Woodstock Eighth: John D’Angelo, Dirty Half Dozen Plus Two Ninth: Carolyn Scott, Reba’s Divas Tenth: Chloe Jacques, Team Famous Thanks to our photographers, Gunner Webber and Joy Yang, and to the players who volunteered as dealers once they were eliminated, including Dallas Graham, Cary Prokop, Quenton “Q” Knight, and Ashley Adams.
