| Owing to heavy traffic and cold weather the tournament start was delayed almost twenty minutes. It was the first time many of the players had been to Shonnas.
The pool tables had been moved out of the way, and seven poker tables were set up, including Darby’s newest creation, an octagonal 48” table with padded rails, a chip/drink trough, and a padded, royal blue velvet felt. 43 players were in attendance when the game began, and after only a few minutes, (the first hand), William Bolfik made the first re-buy. The re-buys were offered only for the first hour, and in that time no one was eliminated from the game. One player was heard complaining: “I don’t like this style of game”. Later, the same player confided: “I’ve never had so much fun playing poker”! In all, 29 players mad re-buys. There were 47 re-buys combined, for a total of $720,000 in chips, (not counting color-ups). It took less than four hours to reduce the field to the final eight players: 1. Ron Phillips 2. Bryan Seggerman 3. Jenny Haskin 4. Kristal Gardner 5. Joe Anschutz 6. Darryl Bechtol 7. Tim Olsen 8. Michael Oliver Bryan Seggerman hit Quad-Aces to take out Michael Oliver. Ron (RP) Phillips hit Quad Sevens to take out Joe Anschutz. The heads-up between Bryan Seggerman and Ron Phillips was epic – and when the smoke cleared, Ron stood alone amid the flotsam and debris, a pretty good, non-plastic trophy in hand and a smile on his face. |
